Children, staff and invited guests celebrated the official opening last week of Onthank Early Childhood Centre and the extension to Onthank Primary School constructed by Extraspace Solutions.
There was plenty of entertainment for guests with a piper setting the scene for the opening ceremony, the younger children and primary children singing a collection of songs, and after MSP Willie Coffey performed the official opening
The modern £4.3 million single-storey extension, with its large picture windows, has been providing bright, attractive learning and teaching accommodation for youngsters and their teachers since it opened in August last year. The project was awarded to Extraspace Solutions by East Ayrshire Council in December 2013 and just over 7 months later the project was completed and handed over for occupation by the school.
Linked to the main school building by a glass-covered, enclosed walkway, the new facility has six primary classrooms, an early childhood centre for 120 children with wraparound facilities for a further 10, staff accommodation, toilets and storage areas. There is also a courtyard with a soft play area for the youngest children to enjoy, while the original Onthank ECC garden was retained for outdoor learning.
Willie Coffey MSP said: “As an Onthank boy I was delighted to formally open the new childhood centre and school extension. This is a significant investment in the school and the community and will provide a wonderful learning and teaching environment for our youngsters and our teachers too. The early years are really important to our children and families and I know the new facilities at Onthank will play a vital part in the lives of our youngsters.”
Councillor Douglas Reid, Leader of East Ayrshire Council, said: “The Council is delighted to officially open this new building and extension which is providing high-quality accommodation for our youngest learners. The children and staff have been greatly looking forward to this day and I know that they are thoroughly enjoying learning and working in this wonderful modern environment.”
Phillip Hutton, Project Director for Extraspace Solutions said “At Extraspace we strive to produce a designed facility which best represents the end users’ needs as well as the clients aspirations and we are delighted that the scheme has been so well received by everyone at Onthank and East Ayrshire Council. We wish the staff, pupils, parents and local community well in the new facility and trust it will be of benefit to all”
